East Texas Santa: Santa Phil, the Heart of a Believer

Every town has one — that one person whose presence softens the edges of a hard year. The one who makes people pause, smile, breathe again. Here in East Texas, that person wears red.
Santa Phil doesn’t just dress like Santa. He carries the heart of one.
You notice it the moment he walks into a room — how the air shifts, how adults straighten up, how kids suddenly remember how to believe in something unseen. But it’s not the suit that does that. It’s him.
Because behind the beard, behind the laugh, behind the big red coat…is a man who genuinely believes in hope.
How a Helper Became Santa
Phil’s Santa story started humbly, long before the real beard and the crowds of excited kids. Years ago, while studying to become a counselor and working at Walmart, he volunteered to fill in for their store Santa.
“I said, ‘Hey y’all, I’ll do it!’ Never did it before in my life,” he laughs.
A few years later, while walking through the Longview Mall, a professional East Texas Santa spotted his growing beard and waved him over. “He said, ‘You ever thought about doing this for real?’ Next thing I knew, I was Santa — and I haven’t shaved since.”
And just like that, Santa Phil was born.
The Heart of an East Texas Santa: Belief, Connection, and Sacred Moments
The magic of Santa isn’t about gifts or pictures. It’s about moments — the kind people hold onto for a lifetime.
Phil tells the story of a family who first met him in Tyler years ago and have followed him ever since.
“They drove hours just to see me again,” he says. “One year the mom sent a note through someone to give to me. I knew exactly who it was. I got their daughter her own Elf on a Shelf and told her it came straight from Santa.”
It’s gestures like these that reveal the true heart of Santa — kindness, memory, connection.
Then there’s Shayn, a friend from Australia who joked online asking Santa for the smash-apart toy cars he’s been wanting for 40 years. Phil grins, “Tell Shayn he may have been on the wrong list — but I’ll see what I can do.”
Heart. Humor. Humanity.
That’s Santa Phil.
The Hope That Keeps Us Moving
When I asked Phil what Christmas means to him, he didn’t miss a beat.
“Believing,” he said. “Not in Santa Claus — just believing. Because Christmas is about hope.”
If you talk to him long enough, you’ll understand why that message matters.
He’s held children who whispered hard truths.
“I’ve had kids tell me, ‘My dad’s in jail. I just want my family back together.’ And I tell them, ‘You keep believing that. ’Sometimes the only gift we can give is hope.”
That’s the real heart of Santa.
A safe place to speak your heart. Someone who listens without judgment. A moment where anything feels possible again.
He doesn’t make promises he can’t keep. But he reminds people not to stop hoping. And sometimes… that’s enough to carry someone through another hard season.
Carrying On Mrs. Claus’ Legacy

This year, the role feels heavier. It’s Phil’s first Christmas without his beloved wife, Kathy — his Mrs. Claus in every way. She helped him prepare each season, making sure his beard was just the right shade of snowy white.
“She’d look me up and down and say, ‘It’s not white enough yet,’” he says with a soft laugh. “I miss that.”
Grief and joy now sit side by side as he puts on the suit. And yet — he keeps going.
Because she believed in him. And he believes in the kids, the families, the magic, and the message they built together.
A Message for a Worn-Out World
When asked what he would say to folks who’ve had a rough year, Phil offered the same message he gives to children:
“Keep the hope alive. Whether it’s faith, family, or just believing in something good — hang on to it.”
That’s the message behind the beard.
That’s the heart of Santa.
And that’s why he matters so much to this community.

✨ Why I Interviewed Santa
Main Street Moments exists to highlight the people who stitch our communities together — the believers, the givers, the ones who show up.
I chose to interview Santa Phil because he represents everything this series is about: hope, heart, generosity, and the quiet ways ordinary people make extraordinary differences.
This story isn’t about Christmas. It’s about belief — the kind that keeps towns thriving and people going.
And Santa Phil? He’s one of the biggest believers among us.
Know someone who brings heart and hope to our community?
Nominate them for a future Main Street Moments feature — I’d love to share their story.
